Wairarapa Moana

Our local museum Aratoi is organising an exhibition on Wairarapa Moana, with the help of the Wairarapa Moana Incorporation . Today we took a bus trip with representatives from many interested organisations, and local farmers and iwi.
Our first stop was at the Lake Wairarapa Domain where Alton Perry (below) and Amber McEwan showed us the results of their night's set fishing - a lot of perch and rudd.

Amber gutted one of the eighteen perch to show us what it had been feeding on - immature native fish. A worrying sight.

We also got to spend some time high on the Pounui Ridge, overlooking the majestic Lake Pounui, one of the eyes of the great fish Maui hauled up to form the North Island.

That led us to lunchtime.......

Needless to say, there is going to be a lot more to come on this great project.
