Wairarapa Archive opens the window onto the world

The Wairarapa Archive has joined the nationwide Matapihi website, dedicated to being a window to the online collections of New Zealand's major cultural institutions.
The Wairarapa Archive is the smallest of the 17 contributors and the first from a small provincial centre. To date the archive has contributed over 1600 images ot the collection, but plans are afoot to substantially lift that number over the next few months.
For archivist Gareth Winter this is a big first step.
"We have always been keen on ensuring the Wairarapa public had good access to our collection and the many treasures contained within it. The advent of nationally-based finding aids, such as Matapihi, the Digital New Zealand project being run out of the National Library of New Zealand, and the new Community Archive website administered by Archives New Zealand, allow us the chance to spread the word about our riches nationally and internationally. It is as if we can think locally but act globally."
